Ask IH: How many of you run a blog?
By

May 8, 2018
I have a tool in mind for bloggers and wanted to know a few things
How big the blogging community is on IH.
How do you advertise or reach an audience?
How many visitors to your blog share your articles on social media (Facebook and Twitter)
I'm shifting (it's not actually much of a shift) from my strategy of "never blogging enough" to framing my posts not as a blog, but more as just articles that are available on my site. (I'm doing this by removing any "blog" related language, and downplaying publish dates, among other things.)
I'm hope two-fold with perception: it won't look like a unmaintained/stale blog, and it'll increase the impact of individual articles. I tend to write longer posts, so I think this is just a better format for me.
Patrick McKenzie suggested this strategy, and I really like it.
I've launched https://edvins.io last month and wrote a couple of articles.
I've shared the posts in 2 places:
As an example, I got ~3,500-4,000 views from these 2 sources.
Re-submitting your blog post to medium and linking it with the original website, might bring traffic as well.
Hope it helps
Blogging on https://carlchenet.com, mostly on sideprojects and free software, both in English and French.
I usually share on (if related to):

Started http://fullbit.ca in Feb. Been writing fairly consistently since then. I try to write at least one article a week.
After I write a post I submit it to a few social communities like reddit and HN. Then I publish it with canonical links on content publications. Always post on my twitter account, and I also have a newsletter list that Is slowly growing which I list my new articles in.
Most of my social media shares come from the publication versions of my articles. Two of my articles from my actual blog have made it to the front page of HN, which spurred a lot of social media posting, retweets, mentions etc.
In general, I don't think many visitors share my articles on social media though.
I run a blog sort of. I call it "Topics".
My goal is to write just evergreen guides and resources and not throwaway fluffy posts.
I haven't had much bandwidth yet to add a bunch of blog posts.
I'm experimenting with sharing my content in different communities. Sub reddits, Indie Hackers, FB Groups, and LinkedIn groups.
Not many. Just starting out really.
Hi all, when you reply to this post, can you please share what blogging platform you are using? I am looking to start up a blog soon and don't know if I should go with the traditional Wordpress blog or an alternative platform.
Something very important to me is the ability to enable reader engagement. If I want users to login and comment, or connect a Twitter or Google account (like Indie Hackers allows us), I would LOVE the option to do so. Thanks.
Personally, I would recommend to choose WordPress. I would recommend to choose WordPress. It has many plugins that will allow to to extend your site functionality if needed.
I write sporadically at www.angelobasile.it and when I post something I put a link on Hacker News. I've got a couple shares from social media, but not much.
