What is your experience with outsourcing? I've had my experiences and wondering if they are unique. I've worked with HCL twice (not my projects) and it was a disaster.
Based on my very limited experience of working with offshore devs as another developer (either as part of a Fortune 500 company or a startup), if you're looking to outsource, it maybe easier overall to look into Eastern Europe instead of Asia. The best and brightest in Asia either are already in North America or the EU, or they are working for hot startups in Asia and not doing outsource work. For reasons unknown to me, this isn't the case in Eastern Europe. There is a lot of really good talent still there and they do outsourcing work. Upfront the pricing may not be as competitive, but there's just way less issues even when you account for language - making it cheaper and faster overall.
When I think about it, one of the reasons may be because Eastern Europe is closer to us in terms of culture. Let me give you a common culture problem while working with developers in Asia. They will often repeatedly say that they understand something, when in reality they do not. A related problem is that they will say progress is being made when it is not. There's just a really big avoidance of not admitting you don't know something or that something is wrong which is a really big problem when working remotely, because it keeps problems from being fixed. This hasnt happened to me when dealing with devs in eastern europe. The code tends to be a lot cleaner too (I guess that's why it works)
That said, there are probably a lot of great exceptions that really deliver in Asia, but I just haven't worked with them yet.

Yep, all head nodding and "yes yes" when they are completely confused and don't know what to do.
If you have budget, then, of course, it would be better to have your own in-house team.
It also depends on type of project that you are doing. If it is something typical, like website or mobile application, then you can hire freelancer to do the project.
Another good solution is to hire someone to review freelancer or outsourcer's technical skills, to make sure they are capable to actually finish the project. That would prevent you from scam.
By the way, what are you doing? Let me know, maybe I can help you with that.
No plans to outsource. Just wondering if other people have positive stories.
