Postgres hosting options?
I'm trying to assess the minimum cost for a modest (but not toy-sized) app with hosted postgres.
For example, on Heroku you would pay $7/m for a dyno that doesn't sleep and $9/m for 1e7 rows on postgres. So a minimum total might be $18 per month.
AWS RDS pricing is really opaque, but just messing around on http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html gets a monthly fee that goes as low as about $44 per month.
Based on this, it seems like the most efficient route is just to maintain postgres on your own box. It's a little bit of extra upkeep, but you have a faster site because you skip round trip delays and save a bit of money.
Are there other interesting options in this space?
Compose is pretty good: https://www.compose.com/pricing#postgresql. It's not cheaper than heroku though (although I think heroku has vendor lockin).
I'm pretty sure AWS has the cheapest option. The calculator does seem meh, but I've run a few cheap RDS a while back (although I haven't recently.)
I'm using Compose right now. It's basically been "set it and forget it" for me for the past 6 months.
$5 for a digital ocean droplet with postgres on it but you'd want a pretty small dataset.

Sounds like you haven't found any better beginning options for hosted postgres either?

It's great until you start wanting to run several sites for fun. After a bit it adds up.
And, of course, Heroku is good. But nothing is hands off.
