How to create a warm and friendly community (like IH)?

Hey! I really wonder how it is possible to create a healthy, friendly, warm community. Like this one :).

For example, we have a local photo sharing site in my country. You can upload your photos, others can rate and comment them, you can create or join discussion threads etc. It's similar to the 500px. But the discussions often end up with off-topics, offensive posts and personal insults.

But here, no one is angry if the same question is asked over and over again, no one is offensive if someone shares an amateurish project. The community is really friendly and supportive.

Do you have ANY big or small tips and tricks how to create this kind of community?

Here is a recap of what I read here on IH and elsewhere on community building.

Put shortly: Moderate posts and encourage users to help each other

    • Be an active and bold moderator: Answer questions quickly and be a role model (@channingallen answered all questions himself at the beginning and still sends out round-up emails frequently)
    • Create clear guidelines for posts (What is allowed? What not?)
    • Delete everything that violates the guidelines
    • Let users flag posts
    • Hunt and ban spammers
    • Use captchas for newbie posts

One last thought I got from Github's community student challenge: Shared struggles are stronger and last longer than shared interests.

That is why a forum for solopreneurs (struggling with so much…) might have a more supportive vibe than a photo community.

It's true that people pushing towards a common goal makes for a friendlier community than a community where you're directly competing.
