How do I get press for my newly launched application?

I'm very new to the world of guest blogging and getting press for my application. Has anyone had experience with this? If so, could you get me a few tips on how to start?

Do I reach out to bloggers individually? Do I reach out to the website (such as lifehacker) and ask them to blog about my application? Do I write content, and then ask them to list it as a guest blog?

There are a ton of articles on the web like "The best Chrome extensions that can save you money". I'd love to get Compass featured in one of them.
