[CHIME IN] How to Test the Market Before Building a Product

After following the 'Field of Dreams' advice of 'if you build it they will come', I've realized that might be true for the ghosts of baseballers, but not for startup customers. Determined not to make the same mistake again, my goal is to build a landing page for 5 startup ideas and see which captures the most leads, then build that MVP.

Here's the issue. How do you market just a landing page? Is that appropriate to submit to sites like ProductHunt when it's merely a concept and not yet built?

Since just about everything already exists on the internet, what provides a solution to bring the target audience to a site?

    I'd suggest this:

Find out where they hang out (let's say you find a Facebook group with 1000s of your potential customers).

    Make a post, something like:

"Hey, I'm making [x], if you want to know when I release it, type 'yes' in the comments".

I'm seeing these types of posts A LOT on many entrepreneur Facebook groups, and people actually comment on them.

Now, try that with the 4-5 ideas you have. See which one has significant traction.

Here's a quicker way to test your market: cold email your ideal customers

Some benefits of using cold email for product validation:

    • You can test different messaging (different copy, different benefits, different pain points)
    • Instant feedback: if you see someone open your email but they don't reply, you know that messaging probably isn't working. If they don't reply within a day, you move on.
    • You know exactly who your audience is (since you had to find the people you email), rather than having to guess who is visiting your landing pages
    • You start a dialogue with potential early customers

    The hard part:

    • Finding RELEVANT people to cold email
    • Finding their email addresses (but you can use hunter.io or skrapp.io to do this)
    • Scaling it (although this isn't a massive problem if you're in an early stage startup since you have to do things that are unscalable)
    • Handling the rejection

Shameless plug, but here's a blog post you can read (from my startup) that will give you tips on how to send cold emails:

You provide a solution. Concentrate on the ideas that fix a problem for people. Talk to people to discover whether they will pay you to fix the problem. Use the landing page to discover more.
