Anvil has open-sourced their app server

I am a Python developer coming from a VB background. I've avoided front end web development for years because I felt the ecosystem for doing so was a horrible ever-changing mess. Recently I've been using Transcrypt to create Python front end web apps using React with a Flask REST back end, and this has been working out very well for me.

Prior to using the toolchain I'm using now, I looked into Anvil, a hosted development tool for creating web apps using Python that uses a VB style GUI. While I was really impressed with the platform they developed, I was put off by the fact that you had to host your apps on their platform and pay not-insignificant monthly fees to do so, while also risking the life of your app on the viability of their company. For me that was a deal breaker for using it as a application development tool for my clients. Then today I received this notice that says they've open-sourced their runtime engine and app server. I might now have to give Anvil another look since this removes one of my biggest blockers to using it.
