Dear fellow IndieHackers,
I wish to know your opinion on building community in the modern times. I see that there are two approaches -
Chat-based platform [ Slack, Discord ]
I see a lot of creators adopting to chat-based platforms where messages appear in the form of a chat.
Discussions-based platforms [Circle, Tribe, Discourse]
The discuss-based platforms allow you to share messages divided into threads and they are organized topic wise.
Having been in community building space for over 15 years, I'm inclined towards discussion-based platforms where discussions are well organized and are easy to follow.
Plus, for open communities; these forums can drive a ton of traffic through SEO, which is your free marketing.
I'd like you to share your thoughts on these platforms.
Interesting breakdown — especially your point about discussion-based platforms being better for SEO and long-term value. For community-driven SaaS or creator tools, that structured knowledge really compounds over time.

I like how you compared chat vs discussion formats — chat works great for engagement, but forums definitely win for searchable, evergreen content. Feels especially relevant if someone’s building a community-focused product.
