Spoke to James Clear on video call last week. I asked him "If you had to start over again. 21 years old. How would you go about building a following" Here's a summary of his answer:
- Email List is still king. It converts far better than twitter
- Blogs are losing market share. So go with either You Tube + Podcast as well to balance that.
- 2 articles a week. Every week. For 3 years. If you produce quality you'll get breaks.
- SEO is underrated. Nail the basics.
- Use whatever leverage you have to your advantage. You can start off guest writing for a small Medium publication. Then a bigger Medium Publication. Then get featured life hacker etc ...
- Make good free products / guides. Make people enter email to get the free guide.
Anyway, thanks to James for the call. And cheers @csallen for the opportunity!
How do you balance "Blogs are losing market share" with "2 articles a week" and "SEO is underrated"?
Hahah! Good question.
He seemed to still place blog as number 1, primarily because it can feed email list. Hence two articles + seo. But also look at you tube / podcast / instagram / twitter etc ...
Bear in mind, James didn't have another business which this was supporting. This was full time audience growing.
If you've got a business, this would be too much I think.
Yeah, good point - growing an audience where the content is your primary product (e.g. blogger/podcast/YouTube channel) might be different from growing an audience as a secondary/marketing channel for your product (e.g. SaaS platform).
Still, a few interesting points.
