This comes up quite a lot.
It's wrong.
There's always a 'second way out' --> just closing the page.
People who do that probably aren't coming back. So give them an 'escape chute' instead. If they aren't ready to buy, offer them something of value in return for their email address, or a call, or a case study.
Just something to keep them engaged, overcome their objections, and get them to come back later and buy. #landing-page-feedback
I wish I could love this twice. Usability studies have shown that the second most-performed action on the web is clicking the “back” button (bested only by clicking links). The maze/squeeze/trap page stuff can be effective, but is by no means gospel and can be an annoying dark pattern (hostile interface design).
If you do this with an exit popup, I will still leave, but twice as mad :) Oh c'mon, don't you know people always buy the first time around! /s
