Also, I'd say the 'sunk cost fallacy' plays a part here. If you've already spent a lot of time and money working on the problem you don't want to abandon it. That's what happened to me with my first startup - six months trying to solve a product issue as my startup bled money. I eventually walked away. As you say, getting input from others and not focusing on just one thing is key.
Intellectual latency isn't something I'd thought of before, but now you mention it I can think of so many times I've tried working on a problem in isolation and not got anywhere with it, and then when I suddenly switch focus to something else, I figure out the solution to my first problem.
