Is my startup B2B or B2C?

I know this sounds like a ridiculous question, but, hear me out. So, we are building a SaaS tool for teams to plan their work and communicate. It's called Bottle (You can check it out here: bottlehq.com). After doing a persona and competitor analysis, we figured that the best go-to-market customer segment for us would be early stage startups and small scale companies. Now, you would think that this answers my question and we clearly seem like a B2B company.

But this is where it get's tricky - although it's businesses that will perhaps bring us the bulk of our revenue, does this mean for certain that we should position ourselves as a software for businesses? Take Slack or Asana as examples. They are also tools for teams and often paid for by a business but they seem to have a very customer centric approach when it comes to their brand and their marketing. Yes, they have plans for individuals as well, however most of their money is made through team and enterprise plans. When you sell to a team or a group of people (who may or may not be part of an enterprise), is that B2C or B2B?

Another important point is that our product provides value on an individual level by increasing productivity and helping you accomplish more but it also clearly brings value to teams and business. So, given all of this, how would you recommend for us to position ourselves as a brand - a software for companies or a software for individuals?

I think you've answered your own question with the phrase although it's businesses that will perhaps bring us the bulk of our revenue.

Looking at your tool, I agree that teams within businesses are who you should be targetting. You also compare yourself to Slack or Asana which are clearly B2B. Therefore you are a B2B business and all of your communication and branding should focus on that.

Even though your product could be used in a B2C capacity it's not something you should focus on in the beginning else you risk confusing your target customers.

This does make sense. Thanks a lot!
