My new project has a landing page ready to gather interest - https://mycosplace.com
My Cosplace is something I thought of while at a cosplay photoshoot meet-up at a convention - solving my own problem. It is targeting a niche audience of cosplayers who attend events in cosplay and want to be tagged in their photos. The idea is to make it easier for this to happen.
There are a few ways cosplayers handle this currently. Sometimes we stand around looking each other up on Instagram in the moment (though cell service is terrible in some conventions). Others might have a sticker or something with their Instagram handle printed on it. Most of us though spend days following a convention scanning Facebook groups or hashtags for photos of ourselves.
The solution - have a stack of cards with your social media handles on them that you can easily hand out to those who take your picture. This presents a problem though - they might forget WHO gave them this card, and cosplayers constantly have new costumes so photos on your card won't help much.
This is where the website gallery and QR comes in. You can easily update photos with new costumes on a website. The QR code will take people to your site, which also has all of your social media links.
From a technical side, I'm still figuring out how I'm going to handle some of it, but I believe I've found enough plausible options to move forward with validating it in the community.
This is a really interesting project! How do you think you'll go about validating it?
Thanks!
Since I am part of the cosplay community myself this will be easier to validate than my last project. I ran the idea by a group I room with every year at a convention and some of our friends before doing the landing page. I got to use some of their photos in my marketing material. I’m using them to get initial feedback and impressions.
Now I’m working on reaching out to other cosplayers in the community to get their impressions. I’ve started with people I’ve met at cons, and then will work towards cold DMs.
I’ve also started an Instagram account and created my first post. Planning to make more interesting posts and be active on other cosplayers’ posts. I’d like to try TikTok too but that’s a bit more time commitment.
Oh, nice! You had feedback even for the landing page! Perfect.
Sounds like you've got an excellent plan. Good luck! Keep us posted!
Thanks! Yeah this has been a completely different experience then my previous project. This time I’m solving my own problem and building it for a community I’m already involved in. So I’ve got a built-in group of people to bounce ideas off of. And when it comes to outreach (cold DMs, etc…) I’m actually enjoying it because it’s people I would already interact with and we’re talking about a subject we both enjoy.
Plus I’ve been having a lot of fun brainstorming marketing ideas I’m excited to try.
Building for your own people really makes a difference.
By the way, I noticed you’re in ATL. Ever go to or experience the chaos of DragonCon?
"Building for your own people really makes a difference." That's awesome. I'm glad you're enjoying the process so much. I hope you continue to enjoy it as your business grows
I am in Hotlanta! I've never been to DragonCon before, but I would be curious to check it out. Are you a regular there?
Oh yeah, we go every year. Even moving across the ocean didn’t stop us. That’s the birth place of this idea for My Cosplace in fact.
Haha an annual pilgrimage! I've heard great things about it. Maybe I'll make it out to the next one!
"We" = you and your partner? Did you meet through cosplay?
Exactly, my wife and I go together. We bundle our visit home with DragonCon and just make it a big trip.
No, we actually met long before either of us found cosplay. She really got into it and now makes all of our cosplays.
She must be a very talented seamstress!
Do you have a gallery of your costumes?
I think she is!
I don’t have a gallery yet (haven’t finished building My Cosplace ;) ) but I’ve some some on my Instagram https://www.instagram.com/rain2o/
