Modular applications with plugins vs multiple smaller applications

Hi all,

I am currently working on a sort of CRM application that should be build modular. I want to provide some clients with specific features that other clients do not need, but now I was thinking which approach would be the best. Is it better to write a single modular application where customers can turn on and off plugins themselves, or would it make more sense to have multiple smaller applications that integrate with each other using API's and webhooks?

Pros and cons I see myself:

Pro for single modular application:

  • Multiple modules talk with the same database, making the data integrates better (like foreign keys can reference to each other) and there is no need for duplicated data which will happen when using multiple smaller apps
  • I think it will be easier for customers to use the application, because they don't have to search which app which function will be in.

Pro for multiple smaller apps:

  • It is easier to make the application multitenant, because it is really difficult to load modules at runtime ( I work with dotnet)
  • Maybe customers will faster choose for the application when they only need one part of the module.

What do you think? Would you prefer multiple smaller apps or one bigger modular application that probably will integrate better?
