“ChatGPT can already solve niche problems with prompt engineering.”
Sure. But your customers don’t have the time to learn how to prompt ChatGPT. Runway makes high-quality video for creators. Suki automates admin work for doctors. People need tools to solve specific problems without complicated prompts.
“It’s hard to compete with large companies with proprietary data.”
Large companies can’t focus on every niche because they serve the masses. Use open-source AI platforms and access public data directories to solve problems for an underserved niche.
“Building a niche AI model seems hard.”
It depends on what you’re building. You can build useful models by customizing pre-trained models or using no-code tools. Online tutorials and developer communities can help you with anything more complex.
“Niche AI models can still give wrong answers.”
Humans also make mistakes. Keep them focused on the tasks they’re designed for and always verify their output. They’re meant to help you do your job. Not do it for you.

This is a great report, it's reinforcing my thinking about how the ability to add AI in all these different niches will be a reset for a wide array of categories.
There are lot of categories where some SaaS tools that were launched in say early/mid 2010s have basically "won" and accumulated substantial SEO/mindshare moats over time. Trying to compete with these tools is difficult given their inertia along multiple axes - i.e. by virtue of ranking 1st they're accumulating the most links, customers have set up many integrations and have high friction to switch, or even the product is kinda "finished" and users don't seek alternatives in general.
But now if you can add AI in a creative and genuinely useful way you've got a strong positioning angle to take and often a product that is better in a way the incumbent can't be (without themselves adding AI).
When this whole AI craze started I was literally the ChatGPT negative nancy in this report but these days I think much more of the AI value capture will happen outside of just OpenAI/Google/Anthropic. The models are increasingly available/open source/competitive over time and every day I see a company taking marketshare of the solution to a problem people have by generating value for customers via an AI angle.
Two observations:
With NFT hype people kept talking endlessly about all the ways NFTs would change all these different industries/businesses. With AI hype people are straight up endlessly building all these interesting tools and getting customers already paying real MRR to use them at work etc.
Good times to be an indiehacker...
