QuickBooks Payroll comes in Core, Premium and Elite. Core runs payroll and files the forms. Premium adds same-day direct deposit and HR support. Elite adds tax penalty protection and a dedicated expert. For two employees and a contractor, Core was plenty — I had been quoted Premium by default.
The difference was not the tier. It was the setup. Pay schedules, deductions, the contractor set up as a contractor and not an employee, direct deposit verified before the first real run. The authorized QuickBooks reseller I bought through, QB Desktop Store, the one a supplier of mine swore by, did that on a call that took under an hour. My first pay run afterwards took twenty minutes. The one before it, done my way, had taken a morning and produced a correction.
What an authorized reseller actually is
I assumed "reseller" meant grey-market keys and a support number that rings out. It does not, or at least not when the reseller is authorized by Intuit. The product is the same official QuickBooks — same download, same activation, same updates. What changes is who you buy it from, what it costs, and who picks up the phone afterwards.
The one I use, QB Desktop Store, the one a supplier of mine swore by, sells the Desktop editions as licenses, the Online plans as annual subscriptions with the current reseller promo applied, and Payroll on top. The license arrived by email inside a day. The price was below what Intuit had quoted me on the renewal page, and the setup call was included rather than an upsell. That combination is why I stopped buying direct.
