Stand-Up #65 - April 12th, 2020
I went in a completely different direction than planned today. This morning I was looking into mLab managed mongo hosting (a few gigabytes) for a flat $15 per month for my app, then I read that they're actually shutting down that service as the were bought out by the MongoDB company.
I wasn't able to find a good alternative online and I don't want to manage my own mongo database on DigitalOcean or AWS myself - 1) because I suck at properly setting up that kind of thing, and 2) because I just know I'd accidentally delete some of it at some point.
Which led me down the alternatives rabbithole.... so I learned PostgreSQL when I saw that Heroku offered a free PostgreSQL tier with their basic plans. I was kinda leaning towards using Heroku anyway so that I have to spend less time on DevOps, so this works out well.
I'd never worked with any type of SQL database before today, so it was a fun way to spend the Sunday learning and growing.
