Startup Idea: Free Online Courses Platform

I'm personally a big fan of e-learning platforms and I do like to use them sometimes. I also love the concept of free content where the platform delivers the content for free and generates revenue from alternative sources...

How cool would it be to have a Udemy or Skillshare but free to use for the users? The only thing similar to this that I know is maybe Youtube?! But, I guess that's it...?!

There is a crazy huge market out there... Now more than ever! So I wonder how a project like this could be viable and profitable for everyone involved... I mean, technically speaking this can be done with advertising, but with so many ad-blockers and other limitations can be extremely challenging to do a project like this...

What do you guys think?

    Hi Luis,

    There are three suggestions:

    • Pay what you can, but the minimum is not paying anything (the people that find value will pay you more than you expect)
    • Or have all courses free, but offers additional services with a cost (access to discussions, help from the instructor, etc.)
    • Free for personal use, and charge companies for tailored learning for their employees

You should check out Free Code Camp which is one of the best free courses online, their model is donation based though (which I don't agree with personally).

And I would suggest to find a more sustainable solution than advertising/sponsorships, which is mainly not under your control.

"Pay what you can" is a really interesting business model, but I wonder if that's viable for the instructors since they still need to be paid... But overall great ideas, thanks for the feedback @AliAlHussain

Free Code Camp is a great example, still not really sure how they can manage everything just with the donations but they just prove that it's possible...

You're welcome and to be of help, Luis!

"Pay what you can" is becoming more and more used, but as you said it might not be attractive to all instructors, that's why in the beginning you should try to get onboard the ones that are doing courses now for free because it won't make any difference even if they don't get anything out of it.
