TOS updates for 2020

Noticing that there are a ton of TOS and Privacy changes to various services that I use. (getting email notifications). Does everyone just happen to update them annually?

I confirm it's the initial coming-into-force of the CCPA, a California privacy law that applies to businesses targeting Californian consumers. Btw. there are some thresholds here that are interesting - it therefore applies when a relevant business:

    • has annual gross revenues exceeding twenty-five million dollars ($25,000,000); or
    • it derives 50 percent or more of its annual revenues from selling* the personal information of consumers; or
    • it buys, receives, sells, or shares the personal information of 50,000 or more consumers annually for the business’ commercial purposes. (since IP addresses fall under what is considered personal data — and “commercial purposes” simply means to advance commercial or economic interests — it is can happen that any website with at least 50k unique visits per year from California falls within this scope.)

I've co-authored a post on the iubenda help blog regarding the topic that you might find insightful https://www.iubenda.com/en/help/19133-ccpa-guide

Btw. the CCPA/the California AG indeed actually mandate that a privacy policy be updated once in twelve months (at least).

    Happy new year!

I think a lot of the changes are related to new law coming in, in 2020 in the US called called CCPA (California Privacy Act). I don't know much about it but I think it's kind of a US equivalent to Europe's GDPR law.
