September 30, 2026 Traditional to-do apps feel like backlogs of guilt. Building a local-first "Day Wheel" instead

Standard to-do apps just paralyze me with overdue red badges, and calendar time-blocking falls apart the second life runs 10 minutes off schedule. I just want to budget my daylight without chaining myself to arbitrary timestamps.
The idea is a raw wheel of your waking hours where you drop in time chunks -say, 40 mins of language practice or an hour workout - and visually see your actual free time adjust. No rigid calendar slots. The app just periodically bugs you with notifications until you tap "Done" straight from your OS lock screen, wiping that slice from the circle. Overnight, it silently resets your routine.
Keeping it completely local-first: a plain state.toml file, open-source on GitHub, zero accounts, zero cloud bloat, and you handle syncing across devices via Syncthing.
Curious if anyone else craves this kind of low-friction loop, or if my brain is just uniquely broken by normal productivity tools?

Really like the idea of replacing rigid schedules with a visual adaptive Day Wheel. The biggest opportunity I see is handling life happens moments missed blocks should automatically reshape the remaining day not become another backlog. If that adaptive loop feels effortless, this could be much more powerful than a traditional to-do app. I work on mobile products with offline-first architecture and UX and I’d be interested in exploring this further.

100%. Lost time should just naturally shrink your remaining daylight in real time, not break a schedule. I'm also considering a higher-level wheel for quarters or the full year to keep long-term perspective simple. What do you think? I'm starting to build this in a couple of days. Would love to have you as a contributor given your offline-first UX experience! I can keep you posted once the initial repo is up.

Absolutely I’d be genuinely excited to contribute! I understand the real challenge behind Day Wheel keeping the experience simple while making time adapt naturally when real life disrupts the plan. The adaptive day model offline-first reliability and eventually extending the Wheel to longer horizons all have some interesting UX and product challenges. I already have a few ideas around how these pieces could work together without adding unnecessary complexity. I’d be very happy to work through these challenges with you and help turn Day Wheel into something truly useful.
