SEO & Marketing Tips

I'm building a new product and have been spending some time learning more about SEO and the different marketing strategies.
SEO has always been the hardest part for me so if you have any advice you'd like to share regarding SEO or marketing or any recommended articles then I'd love to know about them.

Hi ahm750, great question. SEO is a tricky topic because it's changed so much over the last 10 years. There are a lot of tactics (keyword stuffing, keywords in URLs, links on spammy sites) that used to work well which now definitely do not work and, at worst, can get you penalized.
Google spends millions of dollars on ensuring that quality, relevance and trust are the only factors that determine how high someone gets ranked. They've become very good at this, to the point where the single best SEO strategy is to publish useful, in-depth, relevant content on your website with links to that content originating from other relevant, trusted and popular sites.
SEOmoz 'Whiteboard Fridays' contains some excellent information on how to approach SEO, condensed into short videos: https://moz.com/blog/category/whiteboard-friday. Look for videos by Rand Fishkin in particular. He's a fantastic teacher and the advice is relevant for beginners and experienced marketers alike.

Another really good resource is Brian Dean at http://backlinko.com. He has some killer methods that are pretty obvious even though they're not. He's pretty much my go to for any kind of seo thoughts/ideas/questions.
I've done various-hat seo techniques and have a site that ranks pretty good for the link building it did. But, I spent a lot of money and even though my rankings are pretty stable, I think Brian's advice is cheaper and better.
Oh, if you use Wordpress, the Yoast seo plugin is a must. It really helps dial in your page content to avoid some of the Google penalizing things that Tashicorp mentioned.
