Ask IH: Just launched a social media tool. Thoughts on the homepage?

Hi all, recently launched this, and was hoping you could give me some feedback on the home page. Thanks in advance!

I've become allergic to the Intercom automatic popup and I immediately close any website that makes a sound without me asking it to do so. I would suggest turning that off.

    1. 4

The same here. Intercom bubble on it's own is OK, but popping up (and with sound!) on every page, even before I even had a time to check out what the page is about - is a bit too much for me also :/

We've had a ton of success with Intercom on our landing pages. It is super annoying to me, but I have a lot of customers who think it is a real person trying to chat with them. They ask all kinds of questions, many of which are answered on the landing page. Still, they like the human touch and our chats have helped many people to sign up.

I suggest that you wait a minimum of 15 secs before doing the popup and probably ramp it up to 30. I also agree with the suggestions to remove it from interior pages. You can always add a button for "Need Help" or "Contact Us" that uses a simple JS call to open the Intercom popup.

Thanks for checking it out. From the side of the table of making a product I can see how popups of any sort feel intrusive. But I have to say, user engagement has very much increased because of it.

Anyhow, noted. Appreciate the feedback and I’ll continue to test user behavior on that front.

      1. 1

Has engagement increased since you installed Intercom, or since you turned on the automatic popup as soon as you enter the website?

        1. 2

It’s still a little early to definitively call it (I’m not getting a ton of traffic to the site yet). While traffic has remained relatively steady, I’ve gotten 3 conversations happening this week via Intercom, which is greater than the 0 I received from using oLark for the prior 2 weeks.

    Hi Meridian, have few comments/questions.

    • I would change Zillion word with something else, maybe more "professional" as the rest of the page is in more formal tone
    • pricing is confusing or hard to figure out, the easiest solution would be maybe to rename plans to something more meaningful (like you say in paragraph just above it) ie. Blogger, Startup, Business so I can immediately "recognize" myself (in which bucket I belong)
    • after Sign up there is some glitch happening when scrolling

GeniusPin's Follow Bot® will automatically (and safely) follow users that are likely to follow you back.

I will need a bit more than just "safely" ie. you would need to convince me that you aren't doing some spammy/black-hat/gray-hat stuff. How can you ensure that it is done safely?

Asking for my Pinterest email & password is a huge red flag for me, especially when Pinterest has the API. What is the reasoning behind this?

    Cheers 🙌

I didn't make the connection between seeing your site and knowing it complimented Pinterest. Here's why:

-Your colors are green, Pinterest is red. BTW, your greens aren't the same color on the buttons. Which makes the site look amateurish and rushed.

-You don't mention Pinterest in, "Because You Don't Have Time to Pin and Follow a Zillion Times a Day" and it's word number twelve in, "GeniusPin is like having a personal assistant managing and growing your Pinterest account, 24/7, on autopilot."

-You have too much info in the aforementioned text. Keep it simple so it can be absorbed by the reader. Less is more, and only have a few seconds to get the reader interested. For example, 'Put your Pinterest account on autopilot' for the bold, then more details in the second paragraph.

-I don't see any usage of your site/service interacting with Pinterest directly. Just hypothetical drawings, which although nice, makes it seem you don't have an actual product. Have screen shots, a looped webm video in a mock browser, or a marketing video explaining and showing what your service can do.

Heyo Meridian! First off, I think this is a cool idea for folks who get meaningful traction from Pinterest.

    My feedback:

    • It didn't immediately "click" that your site will automate engagement on Pinterest until I scrolled down and started reading more. People, at least for me, are lazy and need to understand what and why quickly. So, I would suggest changing this,

"Because You Don't Have Time to Pin and Follow a Zillion Times a Day."

to some wording you used at the bottom of the home page...

"Automate and grow your Pinterest account"

    and the supporting tagline to..

"GeniusPin frees you from staying on top of your Pinterest following, automagically."

    Hi Meridian,

I really like it and think it's solid. Here's my nitpicky comments (in no particular order):

    • on your pricing table add a "Most popular" banner to one of the plans to reinforce that people are actually buying something.
    • Similarly, try to conjure up some "social proof". Give it away free to some keen users and get some solid "it saves me 2hrs a day" type of quotes (stuff that reinforces the pain point you're solving).
    • the word 'zillion' in your headline was a bit distracting because I don't see it very often.
    • ditch the ® symbols (I think they look a bit "kid trying to look corporate" to me - sorry)
    • I don't use Pinterest much but understood the concept after scrolling down to diagram with the private board --> public board (probably >10secs). I think you could tighten up your headline to get the point across quicker (maybe I'm just 'slow' :-)
    • Intercom feels like a shop assistant that jumps on me when I've just entered the store. I always look for the close button as soon as I hear the familiar chirp ("...just leave me alone...I've only just got here FFS!").
    • I'm not sure if it's a deliberate decision but the messaging comes across to me as really emphasising the "aspirational" rather than "solving a problem" at key points (like the final 'sign up'). It might be worth split testing which messaging resonates best with the audience and doubling down on that. Specifically, "too busy to be tied to Pinterest" vs "grow your audience" - I know they're linked but hopefully you get my point.

Having said all this, I think it's a great start and I'm sure it's a product that'll appeal to many - good luck.

Great stuff. Thanks for taking the time to write that up. Man, not a lot of love for the Intercom popup on IH :P

I'll try adding a bit of delay to it as to give people some time to browse.

      1. 2

Haha - I guess we're probably at the "we see lots of them" end of the spectrum so perhaps not a fair reflection of your audience? Your experience with it seems to suggest it's working so don't listen to us (what do we know!). Good luck.

Landing page looks good! I went from "what is this" to a pretty solid understanding of what GeniusPin can do really quickly, without ever feeling a terrible moment of "uhh...what?"

    Some nitpicks:

    • What does the Follow Bot use as criteria? You've piqued my interested with that brief explanation; give me another sentence with some high-level details. What makes it "safe"? How does it predict whether a user will follow back?
    • Ugh. Do you really need the (R) trademark scattered randomly (in the page title, and after "Follow Bot") across the page? It gives a weird semi-corporate feel that you otherwise nicely avoided!
    • Your pricing left me confused. How can I estimate how many credits I need, or how many I'm likely to use? An example would be helpful! Your fine-print afterwards ("A credit is used...") helps somewhat, but feels like it could be simplified. Just give me an example so I can think "that one sounds like me" instead of making me do math.
    1. 1

That's awesome feedback. Thanks so much for taking the time :)

offer your subscribers a regular notification which shows the run rate of their credits and forecasts when they will need to upgrade

You should definitely do this, even if only for the upsell opportunity! I don't think it's a substitute for clearer guidance on choosing a plan up-front, but still. Great suggestion.

"It looks like you're going to run out of credits X days before the end of the month, which means you could miss out on Y new followers. Upgrade now!"

This looks awesome. Unfortunately I don't have a pinterest process in place yet. Can you help me set one up? I would then add Pinterest and your tool into my marketing systems!

  8. 1

Clear copy, smart concept. I would rephrase the "Follow a Zillion Times a Day" part though.

Can I follow a specific set up users that meet my criteria? Otherwise it would feel spammy. If it's possible, show it on the page.

    Overall, you've got a good start. 👍

    1. 1

Thanks for the feedback :) The way you follow users is by specifying a Pinterest account that is similar to yours, or a competitor. That way, you're somewhat guaranteed that they are interested in the subject matter.

Really solid landing page here. I opened it, read a few lines, and immediately understood what it was, so huge win there! I am not your target audience, so I will have to assume that you believe there is a market here for this.

    • Your pricing is what jumped out to me. It confused me quite a bit and even after your disclaimer below that explains a "credit", I am still not sure how many credits I need.
