Being an Indie Hacker is Tough. How do you manage?

Wellness: Your Private Mood, Medication, and Health Journal

Hey everyone! I’ve been an on and off Indie Hacker since leaving high school in 2010 and still haven’t been able to achieve financial freedom as quickly as I’d like. I know it can be stressful and lonely so I wanted to know how others deal with these feelings.

I’ve found a few helpful habits go a long way:

  • daily meditation, even a single minute a day helps
  • daily walks (at least 3mi)
  • eating healthy (as Keto as I can)
  • ship every day

The app I’m co-hacking on, Wellness, is built for mental health tracking and journaling, so I think about this issue a lot. It helps me keep track of meditation and workouts alongside my moods and medications so I can hone in on what causes my moods. If you struggle with this at all, give it a shot. It’s free to try 🙂

Hey @anater, you've included some good ones already. 😊

    • Reminders that we're not alone, e.g. IndieHackers. There are dozens of us! Dozens!
    • Mindfulness meditation. I don't try to focus on duration, I try to focus on goals (e.g. being mindful of a specific thing) + body scan practice.
    • Daily walks & fitness.
    • Drink lots of water.
    • Never keep a task/project as something large. Always cut it down into the tiniest pieces so you never get overwhelmed (makes it easier to handle bad days, even shipping tiny things is a positive step).
    • Don't let a project take over your real priorities in life. If a healthy/happy life is important to you, don't fill 100% of your time with work.
    • Continuously shipping (or changing habits) is like training a muscle. It gets easier over time if you do it every day.
    • Go out, be social (coworking allowed).
    • Do social things that don't relate to work. Turn off the machine on time so it can keep going the next day.

Hope it helps! Keep shipping. 💪

These are awesome suggestions. Water is a big one that I tend to forget.

      Thanks for your reply!

I love these suggestions! Especially the one about support system. I couldn’t even keep trying to “make it” without my wife and family providing an emotional foundation. Having that support is truly priceless and goes a long way in being successful.
