Looking for freelancer/potential CTO for profitable, fast-growing startup

Hey everyone, unfortunately our great CTO and solo developer will be leaving at the end of the month and we'll need a replacement. TLDR = more time with family, can't take risk due to personal reasons. No hard feelings and nothing but love.

This leaves me in a unique place - I can either bring on cheap outsourced developers, or someone that will be able to commit to significant time investment and work for equity.

Product:
Collaborative space between sales professionals and potential customers. We're currently servicing two different markets: sales professionals at tech companies that are hoping to close more deals, and marketing/creative agencies & freelancers that want a single place for all client communication. A client portal essentially. Beautiful aspect is that this can be used in so many industries: nearly all enterprise sales, legal, creative agencies, marketing agencies, accounting, financial, etc. HUGE potential.

Traction:
Concluded AppSumo deal in October (www.appsumo.com/recapped), attaining 1,200+ paid customers (majority are Marketing agencies, consultants, and freelancers).
Plus separate MRR from B2B Sales Teams and Startups that was achieved from me cold calling and product demos.

Looking for:
Someone that sees the potential in the project, and is interested in running the company as CTO, or freelancing some (hopefully continuous) work. Ideally in NYC for CTO, but exceptions might be made in very rare case.

My background:
Started 6 years ago as a sales rep at large B2B SaaS company, quickly rose through the ranks (top 1% sales achievement every month), ran and built several sales teams, became Director of Sales at App Academy at 27 where I spearheaded admissions, partnerships, and revenue. Left to passionately pursue building this solution.

Stack:
Elixir/Phoenix, Postgres, React (built using brunch)

This is a really exciting time - our product is still very new, but customers LOVE it, and sales are starting to boom.

Email mark@recapped.io or post here.

Mark, you should include a section selling yourself as someone worth partnering with. Show us that you're the rockstar CEO worthy of the rockstar CTO you're seeking.

Great point - just updated :)

Things an actual CTO needs to know in order to judge interest:

    1. Tech stack
    2. Salary/Equity ranges
    3. Lots more information about your current trajectory. Market size/potential.
    4. Your vision for the product.
    5. Your vision for the team.
    6. Who the stakeholders are.
    7. Expectations for CTO.

Obviously much less for a freelancer, but still need to know:

    1. Tech stack.
    2. Pay rate/terms.
    3. Roadmap.
    4. Expectations from said freelancer.

Otherwise you're going to attract a bunch of unqualified leads.

Recruiting is harrrrrd. Less detail makes for more noise imo.

Concluded AppSumo deal in October (www.appsumo.com/recapped), attaining 1,200+ paid customers (majority are Marketing agencies, consultants, and freelancers).

Any potential tech co-founder should wait until these deals have expired to see the retention rate and actual MRR.

AppSumo is... a deal I'd never make.

I like the idea of Recapped, curious to see what happens next.

Yeah - good point. I should have made that clear - the MRR is completely separate and is from cold calling that I've done. AppSumo was a large one-time chunk that isn't mentioned here.

The value of AppSumo was usage data from a large amount of users, and product feedback.

Agencies, Consultants, and Freelancers aren't a group we'd normally cover, but it seems that the use case for them is even better than our initial Enterprise Sales focus.

Mark - this is super exciting. I love what you're building and know you have the background experience and sales chops to pull it off.

But you're selling yourself a bit short here - make sure everyone else realises what an opportunity this is!

Also, considering whoever comes onboard will be taking over an existing code base, you probably want to mention the current tech stack as well.

You obviously won't need a lot of the advice, but I put together a little tool to help people write a great 'cofounder wanted' advert --> https://www.louisnicholls.com/cfa-nt.html ... might be worth a look through to remind yourself not to be too modest here :P

    Mark,

Great product - interested in trying this out but not keen on connecting through LinkedIn. Is there an alternative sign up process?

Thanks! Absolutely - we just launched login with gmail. Let me know if you'd like a quick run through/demo

I see lots of potential in this project. I am not a programmer by any means but I am a great DevOp/Marketer. Do get in touch with me if you would like to improve your product and grow it much faster.

  7. 1

I think you should mention a tech stack for the potential CTO :)

    1. 3

The kind of "rockstar developer" he's looking for would be able to pick up a different stack with minimal difficulty. ;)
