Is crypto still in our tech future?
I know Bitcoin has taken a dive recently, but crypto and associated apps seem to be on the rise. Do you think that cryptocurrency will still be viable in the future and evolve or is it dying out? (quick aside: I think blockchain is alive and well and will evolve, but could be wrong)
I think there is a very very tiny number of applications where using a blockchain makes more sense than a centralised or shared db solution and in almost all of those very few situations the benefit only exists for a small number of users(Bitcoin as censorship resistant money is needed by almost no one for example). People spent 2018 trying to do X but on the blockchain and it almost never makes sense. I think the market will continue to contract as more and more products fail to materialise or just fail to materialise in a way where the UX is worth using.
Great point, blockchain is still a virtual mystery for the average person. There is no great and novel blockchain product out there. And your point about Bitcoin being censorship-resistant money that no one really needs is so spot on. I think a centralized db solution is probably what we should be maximizing right now. But, the allure of blockchain is still there for some.
I think it's the allure of "easy money" for most in the space. :) The tech rarely factors in.
