Is There a Market for General Purpose Database Software?

Let's pretend you have developed a general purpose database app. How would you go about marketing it? Who would you target?

Many years ago, the database was a standard pieces of software (along with a word processor and a spreadsheet) that most computer users would consider essential. (e.g. MS Office had Word/Excel/Access).

Today, it seems like the database is more of an afterthought. “Everyone” uses word processors and spreadsheet. Not so much databases.

Is there still a viable market for this?
