Ben, what are your thoughts on the "find a hunter" vs "hunt it yourself" debate for someone that is new to PH?
I would also be interested in hearing Bens response.
When the time comes, I wouldn't know whether to launch myself with very very few followers, or pass it off to someone with a much larger following.
I guess the pros would be that you start building that "hunter status" for yourself, in your niche, for future projects.
But a known hunter can potentially boost your project and, with that, your status anyway... It seems like all arrows point to finding a hunter but, I may be wrong!

You don't need a hunter. Just publish your project at the beginning of the day and promote it anywhere you can. That is it.

Oh, come on, nobody watch those. I am on PH daily for the last year.
Best thing to do is find what audience you want to target with your product. Then find an evangelist in that niche on PH.

I'm a PH n00b but I'm definitely going to get my app hunted for my launch. My question is, is it better to wait until launch to get hunted or should I do it at beta stage. My goal is really to get as big an influx of users at launch as possible (once I know my retention from soft launch is good enough). Aiming for this to get better quality app reviews to boost myself in ASO ranking
Just to share my xp.
I hunted my own project, it got 76 upvotes. I asked no one for upvotes, nor had a preexistent network to tap for it.
That led to ~30 free signups, no conversion to paid plan yet.
PH was the only one that got some traction. My posts here on IH, Show HN and a few subreddits led to nothing.

I thought that a hunter's followers will get notified when they hunt you? Hence the more relevant followers they have the better, no?
A lot of people have talked about this but I haven't seen much concrete data on how big the difference is. It does seem to make sense to find a good hunter though.
Sure, if you get hunted by Niv, Ryan or similar, it makes a huge difference.
But finding someone else to hunt you shouldn't keep you from launching. A top 100 hunter will just hunt you if you had contact before and below that there is no difference.
So U are saying that if my product gets hunted by the top 100 hunter it will get some traction else it would create no difference.
Of course it shouldn't prevent you from launching but from what you are saying it could be worth it to postpone launch in order to find a good hunter.
Is there a particular reason you say top 100, or is that just an estimated benchmark where it's probably not worth the effort for a hunter outside the top 100?
It would be good if Product Hunt published some data on this so we could work these things out clearly, but I guess it might create some perverse incentives.
I'm just saying that the follower/following relationship doesn't have as much influence as on other platforms. I follow a bunch of people and never look at their specific launches.
It is way - and I mean waaaay - more important to have a small network of people who will upvote your product in the first few minutes. That's how you get out of the 'New' section and can climb the ranks.
Top 100 is an estimate. Those are usual people who also have a high following outside of ProductHunt, so naturally their hunts get more views. That being said, they mostly have a big pipeline of Hunts to do (see latest Niv hunt from Maisie Williams app), so why not just hunt it yourself?
