Ask IH: how will you promote a free app?
I recently launched a free app (https://stockstalk.club) that is all open sourced and doesn't plan to make any money. question is - how do you promote it?
being free and open source remove the paid chanels option.
what do you think is the best way to promote a free project?
Improve your SEO for search term "robinhood desktop", "robinhood windows", "robinhood mac". Specifically, your landing page should be https://www.stockstalk.club/robinhood-desktop-mac-windows-client (because URL is important for SEO). Redirect "/" to that URL.
I use that trick for https://sumatrapdfreader.org
Add apropriate title, meta description tags etc. Follow Google's basic SEO guide https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7451184?hl=en
Link to website from readme.md in github to that page.
Also, where on reddit did you post and what exactly did you post?
Google search found https://www.reddit.com/r/RobinHood/comments/5vmdwj/desktop_platform/ i.e. people were asking for it on r/RobinHood

Also, is it just for RobinHood or a more generic stock/portfolio tracker? For a generic stock tracker there must be a thousand places to promote.

Congrats on the launch! There's a few different options. Product Hunt, Reddit's Startup channel, targeted Facebook Groups, targeted newsletters, etc.
thanks, maybe because i'm not a marketer but i didn't get any good results there. I tried PH and Reddit without any traction from it. felt like it's basically "post & pray".
