Ask IH: Why Does the Smiling People A/B Test Not Work for Us?

We're developers at heart, and marketing doesn’t come naturally to us. We’ve read multiple articles on the positive effects of placing smiling people on pages. So we decided to try this out.

Our product Bugfender is available for several platforms, with our primary focus on iOS and Android. So we thought we’d A/B test our original platform pages with a version of a smiling person.

We ran that test at a 50/50 ratio for 10 weeks, tracked the number page views and the number of clicks through to the the signup form from each version.

Both versions were served on the same url, but for the purpose of this demonstration, we’ve separated them out, and you can view them here:

Based on what we’d read, we expected to see some sort of increase (however small) in sign-up clicks when coming from the smiling versions. However the result we had we very different:

  • Android smiling CTR: 17.49%
  • Android normal CTR: 21.29%
  • iOS smiling CTR: 21.74%
  • iOS normal CTR: 31.43%

Over the course of 10 weeks, pages served with a smiling person always performed worse, averaging 5% for Android and 10% for iOS.

We understand that there is no special formula that works for all, but we didn’t expect this, and we were wondering if anyone may have any insights or ideas as to why this might be?

Could it have been the extended content? Or that the picture was too generic? Did it perhaps distract from the real data about the product? These are some of our thoughts, but as marketing is not our forte, we really have no idea and this is just speculation.

We’re always keen to try out A/B test and experiments, so we’d love to hear any ideas or suggestions you have too.

    I'd be willing to bet $50 that the smiling face itself wasn't significant for this test. Given the layouts, these are basically two completely different landing pages (per platform).

    My strong hunch is that the non-smile version performed so much better because you do an 'ok' job of explaining prominently why I need the product.

    On the smile version, however, it takes much, much longer for a visitor to understand why they'd need your product. Definitely enough to be responsible for a 10% lower CTR.

    If you want to A/B test the smiling person, then only swap out that one component...

      Yup, this is the answer. It's not that smiling faces are bad for conversion, it's that your original page is just much better, irrespective of photography.

      One of the big rules of A/B testing is that you cannot A/B test large changes.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts @louisswiss and @vwoo, we'll definitely adjust our A/B tests to just trial one smaller change at a time.

    The non-smiling landing pages look a lot better. I agree Bibhas that the person's face is too distracting.

    I think it would be better if the smiling people were inside the app screenshot. For example, in the Android landing page, inside the app screenshot, you can have smiling people in the book section.
    I also think the non-smiling landing pages showcase your product better especially the screenshot showing the logs compared to the smiling landing page where the first thing I noticed was the dude smiling at me and confused me.

    Just my 2 cents.

    I was taken aback to see a person's face (never mind the smiling) on a log aggregation product website. I just wasn't expecting that.

    Also, the person's image is kinda big and distracting. I didn't even notice your website screenshot the first time around. Maybe try making it smaller.

    What tool are you using for A/B testing btw?

      Thanks for your input @bibhas, it's great to hear about your reactions. To test, we're using a combination of tools, but ultimately serving the variants of the page from our site, and sending data through to Google Analytics. We do also use Optimizely for testing other elements too.

    On mobile I only see an elbow, I'd think that could be an issue. I didn't test it, but have you checked the loading times? Even a small change like 0.1 seconds can change the conversion rate.

      Same! No smiling person visible (just the elbow)-- and a noticeably slower load time
