How do you do SEO keyword research?

Before doing content marketing, how do you guys do your keyword reasearch? Do you do it yourself? Do you hire and agency? Fiver? Upwork?
Is there really a bit difference in quality between doing it yourself and hiring a SEO expert to do that for you?
It depends on how much content you want to create. If you have hundreds of pages to fill or plan a huge content marketing campaign, get a professional.
If you're starting out and have a handful of pages, you can do it yourself.

This is interesting timing haha, because I recently took a focus on SEO for my SaaS app. So far I have been fortunate to be riding the coat tails of the app stores to get exposure. Now that the product is maturing, I have been thinking about getting more exposure. One of those ways is SEO.
The way I have been approaching it is to identify competitors in the space and study the keywords they use. I use tools like semrush and nightwatch to study and monitor them.
There are articles that suggest best practises for SEO, such as adding H1 tags, using good meta description, having the content match a subset of the words used in description, having good backlinks

To answer your question: I do my own keyword research, you can follow this guide from ahrefs to have an idea of what it means.
Interesting question though, because I'm just thinking about starting a new project in the content marketing space. I want to build a tool that suggests you blog posts titles, content and keywords to use for SEO optimized articles that drive traffic.
In a nutshell, you wouldn't have to do keyword research anymore, just type your seed keyword in my tool and it brings everything to you in one place. You'll just have to write the content of your article.
