What are some must have notches to have on my belt in the freelance marketing world? Right now I'm wrapping up some HubSpot certifications (Email Marketing and Content Marketing) then I will dive into a Google Adwords Cert.
My goal is to help companies in my niche with their email copy, blog posts, Copy for Trade show materials, and possibly White Papers if there is the opportunity (unlikely since my niche is B2C but who knows).. Can anyone chime in?
Lousy time of year for bad news but congrats on your new found freedom :)
My friend Mocja just wrote a reflection on how being laid off led her to building a successful freelance practice, as well as shipping and selling products. I think it would be an inspriring and useful read for you right now:

I also highly recommend doing some homework and reading on Brennan Dunn's website (Mocja mentions it in her post): doubleyourfreelancing.com. I get no kickbacks on recommending this stuff, but I share it ALL the time with new freelancers and everyone says it changes their outlook for the better.
you can do this!
Sorry to hear about the layoff! Happened to me in June, never fun. I think FB campaign knowledge and A/B ad testing, which has a very measurable impact and can show performance quickly, is also a must-have.
Interesting times to get laid off, with the markets tanking and the US fed govt in shutdown and Brexit looming.
Good thing to get certs but get some content out there, put your skill into practice so people can see more easily what your work looks like. And don't start yet another marketing blog, please. Your hobby or favourite sport is just fine. Or something local if that's your thing.
Some tips: Compile a list of interesting startups in your area, companies younger than two or three years, take the three you find the most interesting, figure where their marketing could be improved and just reach out to the and offer your help on a freelance basis. Small companies are more likely to outsource but don't be angry if in a year they decided to pull those things in-house.
If none of those companies convert, try a few more but also look for web-agencies that are weak on marketing and could take you into their network of freelancer.
Good luck to you.
That's a pretty good set of skills to have (Inbound and PPC). I'd get some basic web development stuff too - just learning how to set up Wordpress sites would also be useful.
Sorry about your news. I would specialize in " retention ". And welcome emails for onboarding. If you are really good at this, join upworks.
Certs are useless, even more so if you are on your own.
I've actually learned more in one week about modern marketing than I have in 3 years at my 9-5. I used to do mostly Excel reporting and some design work, but no real internet marketing. I get what you mean though, I'll need to back it up with some actual execution.
