Can I tell everyone about our awesome social impact startup?

Hi everyone,

My name is Sonny, I'm a Taiwanese-South African-American immigrant and Marine Corps Veteran who took a leap of faith several months ago and launched a startup.

Growing up in South Africa, we constantly lived under the looming fear of gun violence. South Africa has 4x the number of gun homicides per capita as the City of Chicago, and we had family friends who were robbed, carjacked, and even fatally shot in a home intrusion. Because of my upbringing, I have had a longstanding passion for reducing gun violence.

Our startup is called Aegis AI. We look to save lives in active shooter situations by employing computer vision to automatically identify guns in existing security camera feeds, then notifying law enforcement and building occupants.

We were invited to interview at YCombinator for the S'18 cohort (going to reapply!), we took 2nd place in the Chicago Machine Learning Venture Capital Summit Startup Pitch Competition, and we're currently one of 20 teams in the final round of the University of Washington/Tsinghua University Global Innovation Exchange Competition.

We're hoping that we will be able to save lives and make our communities a little bit safer from gun violence.
