What are you currently trying to learn? and how? 📚
Hey everyone!
As a maker, especially when you're a one-man show, you often find yourself obligated to learn a lot of things that relate to your product, or your business in general.
I would love to know what you guys are trying to learn? why? and how you're going about that!
I've been learning to code over the last few months.
I started with Ruby, then moved onto Rails. Now learning JavaScript. Hoping to be able to move on to React in a month or so.
My process has been...
Codecademy > Udemy course > Build a project
Googling and watching YouTube videos in-between.
This is going to sound like a blatant plug, but we're still alpha right now and free. Haha. We made a Chrome extension that lets you take notes on YouTube and link back to timestamps in the video that you took those notes at.
I built it because I learned to code through a lot of those same ways (JavaScript/React on YouTube a lot of the time). Could be helpful for you if you wanted to try it out. :)

Computer Architecture
why: to gain a deeper understanding of how computers work, especially compilers, for my next project

so far I'm halfway through and about to get started on compiler construction, which for me is the most practically applicable part
Computer Graphics
why: mostly for fun, but I figure it'll expand my options in terms of work

I haven't taken the course for Nand2Tetris, but I read the book before it was a course and it is great. I think it is great that you are going a level deeper than the level of abstraction—i.e. on the hardware—you are building on. I think it makes things easier, decisions don't seem as arbitrary anymore.
Blockchain & Bitcoin.
I want to help users buying cryptocurrencies with Mobile Money Wallet, in Africa.
Social Media Marketing.
I do fairly well writing long form articles. But social media, for me, just seems like an overwhelming amount of work with not a ton of feedback.
I wouldn't mind handing over the reigns to someone, but I have this thing where I have to learn how to do something first before I feel comfortable with that.
I've read a few books, they make sense, but it just seems like something that could take up all your time without a direct payoff. I understand the need though.
Been doing a lot of it the past 6 or so years and it can work. It is especially helpful when you have a new enterprise with zero Google juice. You can spend like crazy on ads...but if you have no money social can be a great way to generate some traffic and momentum.
I think the keys are audience building, writing good content, and then posting links to that content. There is more to it...but those are key. Smart automation helps too.
Besides books, do you think that you would learn faster if you had more of a human-assisted learning experience ?
Yeah I'd love to see the day to day work people are doing in this area. Stuff like how people put together campaigns, how they use all the tools, what their mindset is and how they define their short, medium, and long term goals. That's just a black box to me in this field.

Do you rely solely on your own experimentation for your learning ?
Mostly.
Of course, the inputs/ideas are bits and pieces from around, but I like to test what I think might work and then see if it doesn't and try the next idea I have.
The best learning is always by doing and I find I learn faster when I try stuff on my own, rather than read what someone else has done and succeeded, because the contexts are always unique.
Plus, if I follow my own intuition/gut there is a higher chance that the idea will be unique.

Of course! That's what I've been doing lately - reaching out to people who have done what we're trying to accomplish. So far it's helping a ton!

I have a Trello board I use to drop down things I want to learn. Then I assign myself to topics I want to learn and learn them. Currently these include:
I use Learn Anything to find the resources for learning any of the topics. This makes learning new topics a breeze as I have to do 0 thinking of what I want to learn and how to learn it. Everything is done already, I just have to follow through and learn.
I really like the idea of a Trello Board!
The only concern I have is that you don't have the focus which could be detrimental.
Windows Mixed Reality, with Unity.
Pretty different to what I'm used to! Microsoft have lots of tutorials and Unity is obviously well documented also.

Do you think that having someone that can assist you with your learning might accelerate the acquisition of new skills ?
Of course assistance always helps. But isn't always available.
Currently learning to use React. I have been using Angular for a while now, but I have always wondered how green the grass was on the other side. I am learning by building my latest project using React for the front-end.
I'm learning NodeJS right now. I have a serious weakness with backend development (which is what my partner Jordin does, luckily haha), but I want to help out on that side more. I actually don't haven't found a truly great way for learning it... Does anyone have any suggestions that worked for them? I already know frontend JS really well.
I'm in the same boat regarding Node, and I do know backend fairly well (Java, PHP and Python). I've started "messing with it" thinking it would be like any other web framework, but I'm just not enjoying it. It feels like callback hell, some very basic features are missing both from the language and the framework (a simple file-based or embedded database, ffs!), and a lot of third-party libraries are just poor.
But it's basically become a requirement for some stuff I have to do (thanks for nothing, Microsoft), so I'll have to swallow my pride and put my head down. I just wish I could find two tutorials that agree on anything - every single quickstart guide out there is somehow different in significant ways... 😩
E-books are great! I also depended on a lot of people who helped me with my learning. So maybe find a developer friend who can "coach" you
I'm spending a lot of time with React Native lately- maintaining two codebases for 1 app is a lot for one person- so in an attempt to make my life as easy possible I'm trying to pick up a new technology to solve that problem.
