How do you find SaaS ideas?

Here is my advice to my students (I teach entrepreneurship at a University):

• What problems bother you?
• Which of these do you find yourself repeating?
• Is it time consuming for you to solve this challenge ?
• If so, there is value in a SaaS to save people time/money. The time you save someone repeatedly is your ZOPA (zone of possible agreement) and your value creation window. Charge somewhere in that window.

I find ideas everywhere all the time. When I walk my dog, I listen to podcasts about SaaS, business, and startups and generate idea from any clues. When I read IH, HN, twitter, reddit, I generate ideas from problems I see people face there. When I watch TV, see news, talk to my family, friends and relatives, I note all the problems they experience.
So, basically what you need to do is just to see which problems people have and how it can be packed into a SaaS app.

It is also really important to understand how to connect with your potential customers. If you are targeting businesses it is usually helpful to have one or two businesses that you can work with early to refine your service and serve as references to expand. If you are targeting consumers then it is helpful to have some communities that you could target to get people to use your service. From my experience with startups, people spend a lot more time getting customers and keeping them engaged than on the actual technology.
