Has anyone created a generic Project Management App? How did you compete with Asana, Basecamp etc?
I live in a third world country where things like Asana, Basecamp, etc aren't very well known.. So I'm thinking on starting a Project Management App.
I'd love to hear stories from someone who tried the same thing.
Any feedback or recommendation is super appreciated
“Local differences”
It needs to have differences from asana, basecamp, and scores others that are specific to your country. Copy cats of Uber, eBay, AirBnb managed to differentiate on local aspects that aren’t visible to original companies. Scour both companies community forums, review sites, App Store rating and reviews looking for what local stuff they are lacking to get an idea of where they stand. Find features that you can develop to look more attractive to local companies.

We were very much competing with Asana, Basecamp and the likes but were offering more of a all-in-one solution. We were also hosting these on these small personal servers, making data sovereignty and accessibility our biggest USP.
Around the time we broke the world record for crowd investing (raised 1M$ in about 90 minutes), Slack started gaining momentum. It made it's way across the pond and slowly started becoming a 'thing' in Germany, which really worried us.
My biggest learning from that was that if you focus too much on what the competition is doing, by definition you don't have enough time to focus on what you should be doing. A competition for a certain market is not won in a single day and whatever your competitor shipped yesterday won't win over the market in a few days. Keep shipping what you and your customers think is right and stay consistent with your messaging and your development of features. If you focus on the right things you will come out ahead. It's a slow process ;)

What will be unique about your Project Managment App, and how would it provide more values than a, say, more mature products in the market like Asana and Basecamp? I think these are critical questions for your idea or , just in general, before it should be executed.
