Blogging is just a tool like anything else (starting a website, or an app, a podcast or a startup...). If it's a lucrative option really depends on what you do with the tool.
Monetization opportunities normally come after you've built some authority and influence. You need to provide something of value, something that people want/need and are willing to spend their time/money on.
If you can create content that resonates with some people and if you can attract those people and make them loyal followers of your blog, then you will have their trust, eyeballs on your content and attention. This opens you up to many different types of monetization options such as advertising, affiliate marketing, selling your own product/services, Patreon/donations and so on.
Really depends on your niche and competition. In my bubble Whitecoatinvestor reported he brought in over a million dollars of revenue through his family run blog but his success was many years in the making and now that particular market is quite saturated.
