Hey IndieHackers !
I like to start this thread about India's Startup Ecosystem, because I'm really interested in this market but I don't have so much experience with that so far.
Is there any hacker from India who like to introduce us to their local conditions ?
Or is there any entrepreneur from the other country who has successfully break through in India ? Is it easy enough to market a company from EU/US to India ?
You know, we know everything about how VC funds work in Europe or US. Or how accelerators or hubs actually work. But from my point of view India will be very compelling markets to them in very near future, there are many great and very smart people.
Off the record: i am the co founder of private SaaS company and I would like to have a small talk about India's market but then I thought it would be better to publish it here, maybe more Hackers will be interested in this topic.
Hi,
Im from Chennai,India.Chennai is the birthplace of great SAAS companies like Zoho,Freshdesk(Freshworks) but primarily their customers are in US or Europe.
We had a really good Startup eco-system here few years back. But now the VCs are quite skeptical to invest due the failure of e-commerce companies(Flipkart,Snapdeal) which were thought to become like Amazon.
Nevertheless,VCs are willing to invest where there is enough traction and if the business is scalable.
We don't have a viable market here as far as SAAS is concerned and most of the SAAS companies here target US or European markets.
Getting funded by VCs won't be a problem here once you demonstrate product-market fit and some traction(and scalability as well). We do have accelerators here but there is quiet a competition to secure a place in them.
Successful startup founders are becoming angle investors here. They are willing to invest with very little proof of concept once they believe in the founding team.
Dinesh thank you very much for sharing your experience with us !
So it looks like the Indian's SaaS companies looking for customers from US and EU, and Europe SaaS companies do the opposite, try to growth in areas like India. It's very interesting :)
Can you mention some of EU/US company which do very well in your country ? I know from the past that GoDaddy is doing well in Domains business.
Can you say the one biggest difference between India and US market ? you know, I think there needs to be different approach to marketing or business. Something like "honest tip" how to market companies to India. :)
Hey,
For an honest tip:
Having started and sold a Saas business in India (www.healthos.co) and now running a Saas business in Berlin (www.greendeck.co), I believe that it is very difficult for EU/US companies to sell in India.
India is very price sensitive when it comes to buying services, given the very cheap cost of hiring in India.
If you're solution is something that is substantially better and cheaper - then you have a good way forward.
Ex. Mixpanel , Segment, Quickbooks, Expensify are pretty famous and doing well
Ou, thank you very much for sharing this.
Congratulation for greendeck, your landpage looks pretty good. Good luck with that. And yes, this is what I have thought about pricing. Do you think that lowering the price for Indias market will be the good choice ? I think about situation like offer the service in EU and US for double.
It depends, a lot, on your business and the market that you're in. You can drop me a pm at aayush.jain@greendeck.co and I'd be happy to help further.
Ahh, thats great i will hit a message to you ! :)
