Ask IH: Medium or self hosted blog for content marketing?

Although this question could’ve been easily answered with a search on Google, I was wondering what you Indie Hackers think.
As a solo founder, what are the pros and cons of going with Medium vs using a self hosted solution.
In other words, do you favor Interaction (short term) or SEO (long term)?

Host your own, cross-post to medium. There is a way to do this correctly by having medium set the proper meta tags. Some googling should help.
I thought about doing that. Have you had any success doing this? Do the original posts rank higher than the ones on Medium?

I'd recommend hosting your own blog on your domain. If you do your SEO right, you'll see traffic come in from backlinks and SEO. You want that traffic to read the content and move into your site. Doing this on Medium is a bit more difficult for end users.

You can, depending on how much time you have. I'd also perhaps look into adding canonical tags so that Google doesn't penalize you.
Also, fwiw, self-hosting a ghost instance on digital ocean is really simple. I did that for https://blog.sharesecret.co and it costs me 5 bucks per month.
I did that on AWS and its free except the cost of the domain name.
