Choosing between Slack vs Discourse for community building
How do you go about choosing Slack vs discourse like board when you are building a community? i like slack but also feel that conversations get lost in the noise. Additionally using something like Discourse is easier to use when looking at conversations that have already taken place. IndieHackers is custom built as well. What do you all consider when choosing? I'm thinking of starting a newletter on a topic and am leaning towards Discourse as of now.
Discourse if you want to own the content, have evergreen content that lasts, and an email component. The immediacy is lower than a chat tool ie Slack.
IMO start the newsletter first, see if people want it + need a community, then worry about (the very hard task of) starting a community.

As a user and former forum owner: What bothers me is the lack of searchability and discoverability of content on Slack and really, any chat application.
I also agree that Discord is much better than Slack for a community. Particularly with Discord, people don't have to visit your site explicitly, they just have to add the server and if they're using it for other things, they will see your server and get messages from it. So it is maybe a lower friction way to get people to engage.
Discord is a great tool and I choose it over slack in most situations, I think imrank1 was actually referring to https://www.discourse.org/

To start I think you should guide the narrative more, and you can do that with the newsletter with more ease as a single person
In case you'll decide to go with a chat, check out Discord. It's better than Slack: much faster, no message limit, voice channels, single account for all servers, etc.
