I am new to Indie Hackers as well as getting ideas up and running. I have seen a few people discuss using Trello as an idea tracking system and wanted to get y'alls input on how to use it as such. Thanks!
I used Trello for a while, but recently switched to Zenkit. https://zenkit.com
It allows me to have the Kanban board but also track ideas in other forms, most usefully the table view. I can also give each item an independent "Done" checkbox that isn't part of the Kanban.
I have a few fields for each item.
Vaguely how long it will take (an afternoon, a couple days, extended, or fast prototype/long finish).
Have I started on it?
Is it easily monetizable?
Is it a tool or a toy? Both? I also added a 3rd type, content, for things that don't fit into either of these.
3x 1-5 rating fields: How much do I want this to exist? How much do I think other people want this to exist? How difficult will this be for me to build, including any learning of new technologies.
I currently have it sorted by a weighted average of those last 3 items. I would like to integrate some of the other stuff as well, but the priority system already works pretty well since monetizeable tends to correlate with the "other people want it" score.
I decided to try out Zenkit and so far I really like it. Thanks for the suggestion!
I have a board named apps / ideas.
On that board I have a lists for:
· web app ideas
· brand names
· domain names
· niches I think are interesting
I have Trello on my phone and tablet so whenever I think of an idea, no matter how lazy I am — it's easy to add to the board.
Hi, I'm a newbie here too. I use Trello for both idea tracking and progress tracking, either it's for personal or my team. I create a board on Trello to break down my ideas regarding my launch product. So every time I come up with a new idea, I will address it into each card list (e.g: From pre-launch to after launch List group).
I also use Trello for progress tracking. As a writer, I have a few specific areas that I usually write for article blog post (fashion, beauty, self-care, career). So I always address each the title that pops up in my head to the related card list. I have been using Trello since I was employed in my previous job and I think it's useful.
If it's just "hears an idea", I would probably throw it on my "Someday Maybe" list in Todoist.
If it's something I want to actually plan out, I start a board in Trello, 5 columns: Backlog, Blocked, To Do, In Progress, Done. I start putting the tasks I figure out I need to do in "Backlog". They can be in any order.
Once I figure out that I want to move forward on some of these tasks, they get moved into "To Do". As I'm doing each one, they get moved to "In Progress". I have IFTTT take In Progress Tickets and Add them to my Todoist list for "Tomorrow", so I don't slack off. By virtue of this, it also gets placed on my Google Calendar.
If I find I can't move forward on something due to some external force, I tag it, and then move it to "blocked". Once I'm finished, I move it to "Done".
It's a pretty basic Kanban system, actually.
I don't use Trello, but a tool called Notion.
I list out the ideas, then I have a criteria/ framework I run them through.
I delete some then rank the remaining ones.
If you want to use Trello as a tracker for ideas, you need to provide some filtering. Rather than just grouping ideas, you can provide fresh ideas first and add pros/cons under (as the checklist). Second and third columns can be used for successful one and failed ideas. You can provide another section as dumped, for the ideas which fail enough with the cons. Providing proper color labeling is an excellent way to see which idea is better than the others.
So the structure can be like this:
With Trello I track tasks inside my team and this is a good place for storing ideas and assumptions during your project.
For example I have a separate board called "Info" and inside this board our team collect a lot of important information. The most interesting columns in this board are "assumptions for current version" and "assumptions for future versions". We put thoughts about project as soon as they rise up into this columns and discuss it inside cards with use of comments.
The great thing about this approach is that we can return to this info anytime and it will not become forgotten.
I personally prefer https://en.todoist.com/ with its nested lists and use Trello only for simple project boards.
I specifically use Trello for tracking tasks based on projects. For ideas I prefer Evernote
