I have seen alot of people have success with Facebook Groups.

I think it depends on the niche, if it is a techie group I would suggest slack or discord. If it is more general like marketing or coaching then a closed facebook group could work.
Forums are kind of hard to grow.
I think you are right. That's why I chose Slack. I am trying to build a programming community.

At Greenhouse, we used Lithium.com to create a community around our user base and product. It was interesting at first but really tough to manage moderation as it grew.
What kind of community? A top down, or a peer to peer? Patreon is good for top down etc. Discourse.org is good for peer to peer.
