Should I name my company based on the product name?

In my experience, the product name is often not the LLC/C-corp name. That allows for the flexibility you're describing. As far as I know there's no specific reason to have the same name. The incorporated name is almost never known/referenced by customers.

If they are different, it's worth setting up a DBA (doing business as) alias so that anything that references your product (e.g. a check) is actually for your corporation.

Hey @markznyc it's best to have a different name for your app and company. Not being negative here, but let's assume your app doesn't perform as expected in the future and you wish to close it then you wouldn't need to change the company name.

You can always start a new app with a new name under the same company , so it'll be like doing apps under one company umbrella.

If you make your business name your product name, then you'll have some extra protection for your business name from people trying to incorporate in the same state.

It doesn't really matter.

It might simplify some things for your company name to be the same as the product name for now. It at least saves the time of coming up with a new name!

You can always release new products under the same name later.

Most people don't know or care what your registered company name is.

Blackberry went from RIM to blackberry to demonstrate focus on their flagship product.

Meanwhile Google is now Alphabet to demonstrate a focus on a mission more than just organizing the world’s information.

You could always set up a sister company under the same umbrella. Or you could do a numbered business.

Edit: this is for Canada. I’m not sure if numbered businesses are allowed where you reside.

I would say it all depends on the industry you are in. What is your current app that is generating revenue? What does it do and what's it called? Naming conventions are usually tied to the market/marketing and business strategy.
