Looking for technical support

Hi all,

I'm looking for technical support.

I'm creating an alcoholic drinks review/rating Web app.

However, I lack the technical ability to create the database of products for individuals to search and review.

Anyone that can point me in the direction, please get in touch!

There are lots of these kinds of apps already, what is it about yours that makes it different?
I ask because in order to get someone technical interested in your idea you'll have to sell it as something with great potential. For example, I personally have thought about creating something like this myself and could basically build the entire thing on my own so why would I help you build yours?

(Please don't take this the wrong way, it's difficult to portray tone in text but it is not meant as an attack on you, just a straighforward question)

Looking at this conversation I feel like you guys are on to build something like untappd similar to which I have been trying to build some years back. I am not an alcohol consumer but still found the concept to be interesting.

Great to see some like minded folks and will be glad to be of any help if needed.

      Hey! Thanks for the response.
To be honest, mine won't be that different to start with. I will be focusing on one type of drink (Whisky), and I'll be launching it from a UK perspective.

At the moment, the sites out there contain too much of the complicated jargon that people associate with whisky. It's also aimed at a mature age market.

I'd be aiming mine at the younger market (18-35 year old). Tasting notes simple. And rating system simple.

I'd like to evolve from a Web app to a phone app with time, and I also have a revenue plan for further down the line.

I'd be happy to discuss further if you are serious/interested? I'm not over selling it here, as I don't want to advertise all the minor technicalities that I'd be looking to achieve.

To begin with, I'd start building a simple database that is displayed in an easy to search format (by distiller, brand, age of whisky, or name). This would in turn display on a simple, not over engineered site. There would be 2 ratings. The professionals (collected from a number of sources) and then an aggregated user score.
Users would be required to have account to rate. Reviews will be limited to one word tasting notes and a limited number of characters.

There would also be a news section that I'd post updates/link to twitter and Facebook to attract users to the site.

That's it. Sounds simple, but I'm not technical enough to get the bones of the infrastructure in place.

Thanks for reading! And more than happy to discuss further.

Thanks for your response! What a weird co-incidence, I've literally planned out the idea of building a (UK based) Whisky specific app like this myself. Not just rating but with gamification elements too. It felt weird to read your comment because I felt like I was reading something I'd written myself and had to double check! :)

I'd be interested to know what sort of skills or connections you have to make something like this work? Are you a whisky expert? Excellent salesman? Well connected?

Personally, I've been building software for over 18 years now, something like this would be pretty straightforward for me to create. Plus I've worked in (and built) a number of tech startups myself so I understand what it takes to get a tech product off the ground.

          I've added you to Skype.

Do you have an email address, linked-in, social media profile, Skype, WhatsApp or anything at all for us to discuss this further?

Have you looked at WordPress? There are a lot of plugins (free and paid) that often do what you need.

I am a full stack web developer for 10+ years. I may assist you through the process. I know that there are other companies doing similar hence a nice ui with a cool story can do the trick. We may put a simple wizard to recommend people a beverage to drink. boraalparat@gmail.com
