Been running aisa.to for a while now and we just crossed 1,800 assessments. Here's what keeps surprising me.
Everyone assumes the AI skills gap is about prompting. It's not. The two lowest-scoring areas in our data are AI Fundamentals (5.0/10) and Tool Landscape Awareness (5.1/10).
People are using ChatGPT for everything — research, writing, analysis, code — when they should be picking the right tool for the task. Claude for structured reasoning, Perplexity for research, Cursor for code. The gap between someone who uses one tool and someone who orchestrates five is massive and growing.
The other thing that stands out: Safety scores averaging 45/100. Most people haven't thought about data privacy, bias, or verification at all. They're pasting confidential docs into AI tools without a second thought.

Building an assessment that captures this is hard. Multiple choice doesn't work. Self-assessment doesn't work. Conversation-based assessment is the only approach we've found that reveals how people actually think about and use AI.
If you're building anything in the AI skills or hiring space, curious what patterns you're seeing.
