it works everywhere where you have a device using unicode to display characters. so it should work on facebook as well, as long as you use a modern browser with full support of whatever unicode character you are using.

      1. 1

That means on some browsers it may look gibberish.

        1. 1

It depends on the device. The browser doesn't matter. Some old android devices have trouble, but otherwise it seems to work everywhere fine.

          1. 0

The browser DOES in fact matter.
just because present mainstream browsers such as chrome, firefox, safari all support a wide range of unicode chars, does not mean every browser will work - try old firefox 3 or 4 if you have access to them to see what i'm talking about.

The fact that you notice old devices having trouble with their built-in browsers ("internet" app on old android devices for example) is just proof of that.

            1. 1

Nope, you're actually wrong about this.

              1. 0

                care to elaborate that statement?

What do you think am i wrong about?
The fact that old browsers don't display ALL unicode characters is old.

Check this to see what i mean:
                https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1008052

Also read this, which supports my argument further:
                http://unicode.org/help/display_problems.html

                1. 1

                  nope.
                  I donโ€™t have to elaborate.
                  Youโ€™re just wrong.

                  1. 1

At this point it is not even clear what you think i am wrong about, thats why i asked you to clarify. Unicode is something which does not work everywhere out-of-the-box completely.

That is exactly why usually you would want to have a website to download fonts etc when requesting the page:
To prevent system misconfigurations destroy design and presentation and make it as unified as possible across browsers and systems.

The fact that you realize unicode can cause problems on older devices is proof of that: It just depends on the system configuration.

I just gave you a link to the official unicode consortium page which states that there might be problems with unicode if the system or browser is not configured correctly.

And by the way: I do see you are the creator of the website but why do you keep using a different account to comment under your own post?

                    1. 1

oups. sorry, was just asking because Indiehackers shows your realname on the initial post but the nickname, which is different, on the replies.

                    2. 1

I just have the one account.

As a designer, it makes me want to reach through your screen and slap you for making the comment areas look like Geocities. ;-)

I think not many people went on to look at the other pages because they are not closely related to what the font changer does. It's not likely necessarily that someone who would be interested in using a fancy font on social media is also interested in a start up book club or in a to do list.
If you had a product that somehow integrates the fancy fonts like a social media posts planner, the font changer would be a way to give some free value for people who could be interested in your bigger product.

    1. 4

Definitely. I haven't done a complete analysis of it yet, because the to-do list app stats are a bit difficult to work out. But around 1 in 1000 people who went on the site ended by signing up for the book club (35 ish people) which is not great.
But imagine if millions of people went on the site, then I could end up making like $100 now we're talking!

This is nothing new and has been done before, no magic here ;-) :
    https://lingojam.com/TwitterFonts

Anyone wondering how this works: It's simply using a lesser known subset of unicode characters like those โ““โ“ฆโ“โ“โ““โ“โ““, which your normal keyboard is not using usually.
(Unicode defines more than 100,000 characters, if youre interested:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters)

No magic here, and if you have a device not offering full support if will just break and look like shit.
It definitely makes websites look like shit if users abuse it. so not sure how "nice" this tool is?
