Hey all,
I'm James, the founder of Iconic. https://www.indiehackers.com/interview/iconic-7e2e99d813
I'm planning to launch a new project called Setary. Setary allows you to connect to your WooCommerce store and manage your products in a spreadsheet environment.
At the moment I've built out an MVP. You can edit the following product data:
I have plans to add bulk actions; like update all prices by x%, etc. I also want to add some more data that can be modified like categories, attributes, etc.
As such, I have 2 plans; Silver and Gold.
Silver will stay much the same as it is now. Gold will have these extra features.
My question to you is, should I offer Silver for free in order to get more people on board and ready to upgrade to Gold. Or should I stick to the prices I planned initially; $25/$45 p/m respectively?
Thanks in advance!
Hi, James, I am a fan of providing value for free as a means to build your audience that you can sell to.
I would set prices to free and to $49/pm.
Then bug once in a while free users with "Can you let us know how we can improve" and use them as a means to make your product better.
Yeah, I'm leaning towards this. but then I also hear a lot of "I wish I'd charged from day one"!
...says most people that build their products and got initial traction on the backs of free users ;)
True!
Please Google "Patrick McKenzie SaaS pricing". Here's one link:

tl;dr
That's an awesome link, thanks - I'll give it a read.
Firstly, why no love for Shopify 😕(I had the need for an app like this in the past)
Secondly, a good idea might be to check out Shopify's app store and see how similar products are pricing.
Usually, there is a somewhat "free" version available (limited until you get to the paying one), or a 7-10 day trial and then you pay for the whole thing.
In my experience, prices range from $5-7 to $25 p/m, unless it's a really advanced app/USP.
Anyway, definitely a fan of charging ASAP, so maybe the 5-7 day trial is a good approach, given you have confidence in the product and that the users will opt-in for it after.
Hey, purely because I've never worked with it!
Good advice, I'll check it out.
👍
Doesn't Shopify have built-in bulk-editing functions? I use them semi-regularly and they're quite useful.
Yea, there are, but sometimes it's nice to export/reimport the whole product inventory and it's an .xml format.

Hey, some good thoughts there - thanks!
Also keep "loss aversion" in mind. It might actually pay off to offer a full trial, with all the features. When time comes to decide what plan to choose, they could start to justify the Gold plan to themselves.
