I keep seeing the same pattern on AI launch boards. Hunter opens the listing, likes the screenshot, clicks through… and lands on “Book a demo” with a Calendly and no way to poke the product. They don’t book. They bounce. Sometimes they even say so in the comments: cool idea, but I only upvote what I can try in five minutes.
That isn’t snobbery. Directory traffic is low-commitment traffic. People are comparing five tools in one sitting. If your free tier is locked behind a sales call, you lose the ones who would have self-served into a trial and maybe paid later. You keep the ones who already wanted a meeting — which is a smaller pile on an indie AI board.
I noticed this hard while watching listings on EarlyHunt. Tools that showed a clear free path — even a capped one — got more “I tried it” comments. Tools that funneled everyone to Calendly got quieter threads and fewer meaningful questions. Same niche. Different gate.
I’m not anti-sales. If you sell $2k/month enterprise AI, a call might be correct. But if you’re launching to makers and indie buyers, hide the calendar behind a working free tier, not the other way around. Put “try without a call” above the fold. Make the limit obvious. Let the product argue for the upgrade.
Practical check before I hit submit: can a stranger reach an aha moment with zero human scheduling? If no, the board day mostly trains hunters to skip you. Fix the gate first. Then launch.
On Product Hunt Alternatives I keep a blunt note next to AI-heavy boards: free path visible or don’t bother this week. Saved me from burning a slot on a landing page that was really a booking form in disguise.
If your AI tool needs a call today, what would a honest free slice look like — even an ugly one — so hunters can try before they talk to you?
