Ask HN : Get Pocket + Notes , does it exist ?

Hey there community. Im tired of saving stuff to read later without activating it.

I wish to get deeper in my workflow and "read and take notes" on what i save for later. If no note is taken, that's a signal of no interest

My ideal workflow would be :

  • explore the web on non chrome browser (mobile included)
  • hit a button a la get pocket extensions to "save" or bookmark
    • should work with images ?
    • should work with a pdf also
    • should work with a youtube video also ?
  • the "get pocket alternative" would store text content on database (not just keep the link)
  • the "get pocket alternative" would apply some "print" layout and look&feel as get pocket does
  • beside storing, labeling, and indexing content, i should be able to highlight + write notes on highlighted content => like google doc does https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eM5OzFyzExD1_7JAyz3F2h4YNvDS18yR/view?usp=drivesdk
  • sync everywhere

Right now, my solution would be a trello board and taking notes on comments, but i would need to have some sort of scripting to extract text and format from article.

Any ideas ? cheers

I use Evernote web clipper for that. On desktop, I can just highlight the text and mouse right click to save the selection, or if I want to leave a note, then click the extension button and write a note in 'Add remark' field. (Evernote web clipper supports all the major browsers)

On iPhone I can send the highlighted text to Evernote with the native share feature (the app needs to be installed first) I'm not sure about the Android phones, but I assume it'll be similar as Evernote has Android app as well.

I use Instapaper for everything you mentioned. It saves all the text and images offline, and I can highlight + annotate on them. It syncs everywhere, and works with videos. Not with PDFs tho, unfortunately.

Have you tried https://bear.app ? I am absolutely in love with it.

Hey @mohbln, thx for the tip, looking nice. can i throw in a pdf ?
Is everything searchable to keyword or even regex level ? (assume i pay the pro version)

I’ve found everything to be searchable on hashtags or keywords. Not sure about regex.
