It can't hurt. If you're working closely with other programmers all the time, I think spending a couple of days learning basic coding could give you a much better perspective on things and let you be more empathetic in response to common issues (e.g. how things that look simple turn out not to be, how bugs happen).
Probably not. But they need to know behind the scenes of how things work. They need to understand the complexity of the problem.
