Can someone else follow a small team's attendance-to-payroll handoff?

One practical test for a small-team ops view: can the next person understand a weekly handoff without asking the person who maintains the sheet?

I’m testing an editable sample Workforce Box with five views: Overview, Attendance, Timesheets, Leave, and Payroll. The example makes a simple check visible: compare sample attendance and timesheet rows, note a leave exception, then review an hours-based payroll estimate. You can edit a sample row and see whether the handoff is clear to you.

If you actually prepare weekly hours, what detail does the next person most often have to ask for?

Try the sample here: https://blockmade.tech/?utm_source=indie_hackers&utm_medium=community&utm_campaign=phase0b_100activated&utm_content=ih_handoff_clarity_sample_row

It uses sample data only. No live clock-ins, payroll integration, or payroll processing.

This is useful. How are you finding your first users so far?

Interesting. How are you measuring whether it is working?

Interesting take. Would you still recommend this approach to someone starting today?

Thanks for sharing the numbers, that makes it much easier to follow.

The handoff test is a useful framing because clarity matters most at the boundary, not just for the person who maintains the sheet. I’d want the sample to make the exception trail explicit: who changed a row, why an absence was approved, and which hours were carried into the estimate. A short “ready for payroll” checklist could also reveal whether the next person can act without asking for context.

That’s a useful edge case. This is an editable sample workflow; I haven’t validated that it preserves a row-level audit trail for who changed a value or approved an absence, so I shouldn’t present it as handling that. For this test I’m only checking whether another person can trace attendance → confirmed hours → leave note → estimate. What minimum context would you need on a corrected row: owner + reason, or owner + reason + timestamp?

Solid lesson. Which channel has worked best for you so far?

Good write-up. What would you do differently if you started again?

Thanks for writing this up. Bookmarking it for later.

Nice work shipping it. What has been the biggest challenge since launch?

Good point. Did you test that with users before committing to it?

Interesting approach. What was the hardest part to get right?

This is great work — reminds me of some of the calls I've had to make building Xstream4K. What would you do differently if you started over?
